K-pop Album Buying Guide
If you're new to K-pop, one of the first things that surprises people is that albums are collector's items, not just CDs. Each one is a miniature universe: a beautifully designed box, photos of your favourite artists and little extras that make every unboxing a special moment. This guide covers everything you need to know before buying.
What's inside a K-pop album?
The contents vary by group and label, but most albums include:
- CD — with all the tracks from the release.
- Photobook — a mini book of artistic photos of the artists, usually 80–120 pages.
- Photocards — collectible card-sized photos of the members, randomly inserted (usually 1–2 per copy).
- Poster — included inside the box or in a separate tube, depending on the edition.
- Extras — stickers, bookmarks, lenticular cards, mini polaroids or postcards, depending on the group.
Types of K-pop albums
Mini-album (EP)
Contains 4 to 7 tracks. The most common format for mid-cycle releases and the perfect entry point for new collectors: affordable price and compact packaging.
Full-album (LP)
With 10 or more tracks, this is a group's most ambitious release. It usually comes with the most elaborate packaging, a longer photobook and more extras.
Single / Single album
1 to 3 tracks. Quick releases for special campaigns, surprise comebacks or one-off collaborations.
Repackage
An expanded reissue of an already-released album with new songs added and usually a different cover design. Great if you missed the original release.
Digipack
A compact gatefold cardboard format with no rigid box. Very common among fourth and fifth generation groups. Lighter to ship.
Special or limited edition
Exclusive version with additional extras, different design or premium packaging. These sell out fast — if you spot one, don't hesitate.
Album versions: which one should I pick?
Most K-pop albums are released in multiple versions (Version A, B, C... or named editions like "Day" / "Night"). Each version has a different cover, different photobook photos and, most importantly for collectors: different photocards.
If you're just starting out, don't stress about buying them all. Any version gives you the complete album with all the music. Just pick the cover you love most and enjoy the unboxing. ♡
Photocards: the gem of every album
Photocards (or PCs) are collectible card-sized photos of the group members, randomly included in each copy. They're one of the most treasured parts of any album: getting the card of your bias is always a little victory.
Each set usually has one card per member, sometimes with multiple variants per version. There's a whole culture of trading and buying/selling PCs among fans worldwide.
Tip: if you have a very specific bias, buying multiple copies increases your chances… but doesn't guarantee them. The randomness is part of the magic.
Pre-orders: what they are and why they're worth it
A pre-order is buying the album in advance before its official release date. The benefits:
- Exclusive pre-order photocard (POB) — many stores, including Momo Store, include an extra exclusive photocard when you pre-order.
- Stock guarantee — the most anticipated albums sell out very quickly. Pre-ordering secures yours.
- Launch price — no scarcity mark-ups or waiting times.
At Momo Store we open pre-orders as soon as new releases are announced. Check active pre-orders here.
Signed albums: very special editions
Signed albums carry the real, original handwritten signature of one or more group members directly on the album. They are limited editions distributed through special events or label draws, and their price is considerably higher than a standard copy.
At Momo Store we stock signed and exclusive albums when available. We recommend setting up stock alerts so you don't miss them.
How to choose your first K-pop album
- Choose your favourite group. Already have one? Perfect. Still exploring? A mini-album from BTS, Stray Kids, NewJeans or aespa is a great starting point.
- Decide between mini-album or full-album. The mini is more affordable and has fewer versions. The full-album usually has more impressive packaging.
- Pick a version. They all have the same CD. Just go with the cover you like most.
- Consider pre-ordering. If the album has just been announced or is still on pre-sale, pre-ordering gets you exclusive photocards.
- Is it a gift? Look for a special edition or one of the group's most iconic releases. If you're unsure, message us — we'd love to help. ♡
